NHDES to Hold Stakeholder and Technical Work Sessions
Setting Public Drinking Water and Groundwater Standards for PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, & PFHxS
Concord, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) will hold three work sessions in October to engage stakeholders on setting public drinking water and groundwater standards for the following Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs): PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFHxS. These work sessions will be held to receive technical information as well as to inform stakeholders of NHDES’ process for deriving the Maximum Contaminant Limits (MCLs), which, by law, then become the Ambient Groundwater Quality Standards (AGQSs,) for these four PFAS compounds. NHDES is also soliciting input on approach, data and studies to be used for setting these MCLs.
These work sessions will primarily be focused on the following:
- Beyond the studies considered in the recently released ATSDR Toxicity Profiles and the existing EPA Health Advisories, are there other studies or data that should be considered in deriving the health risk limits for each contaminant?
- What data and methodologies should the agency consider in deriving a benefit value?
- What data and methodologies should the agency consider in deriving a cost value?
At each of the work sessions, NHDES will provide information on the current approach to deriving the health based numbers, as well as costs and benefits, and ask for comments. Because of the technical nature of setting standards, NHDES also asks that specific recommendations involving studies, data and methodology be submitted to the agency on or before November 9, 2018. Comments may be submitted to Sarah Pillsbury, Administrator of the NHDES Drinking Water and Groundwater Bureau, at Sarah.Pillsbury@des.nh.gov . These work sessions are for technical comments only, a general public comment period will be provided as part of the official rulemaking process, which is scheduled to begin in January 2019.
