Soak Up the Rain New England Webinar Series:

Smart Cities and Parks: Resilient Environmental Design and Infrastructure in Chelsea, MA

Wednesday, June 12th, 1-2:30 EST     To Register*

This webinar will showcase the planning, design, and implementation of green and resilient infrastructure practices in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Chelsea is a dense, urban community with a socioeconomically and demographically diverse population. Chelsea’s unique coastal orientation and geography as a designated port area expose it to a disproportionate risk of environmental and public health impacts, compounded by a high concentration of critical regional and local industry. Current land use patterns coupled with large areas of impervious surfaces have yielded unique design challenges, particularly related to storm water management and heat reduction. Cognizant of these realities, the City of Chelsea is undertaking the planning, design, and construction necessary to increase resiliency and improve local environmental quality.

Planning and implementation strategies for open space, coastal infrastructure, and green infrastructure will be presented as well as the City’s effective and inclusive public engagement and collaborative processes, given its multiple, diverse partners who are frequently involved in these projects.

Presenters:

Alexander Train, AICP, Assistant Director, Planning and  Development Department, Chelsea, Massachusetts

Fidel Maltez, Commissioner, Department of Public Works, Chelsea,
