Many thanks to Todd Baldwin from the Pemigewasset Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU), and Steve Landry, NH DES’s Merrimack Watershed Supervisor, for sharing some great photos from the Pemigewasset River Restoration Project. Along with TU and DES, project partners on this effort include Horizons Engineering, Headwaters Hydrology, and Coleman Construction. The project was funded through a Watershed Assistance Grant from DES and an NH State Conservation Committee Moose Plate Grant award.
Enjoy today’s project photos and remember to submit your project photos to sally.soule@des.nh.gov
1. Instant Buffer!
On the Pemi River Restoration Project, we didn’t mess around with potted plants or seedlings…You can traffic in entire bushes and trees when you have heavy equipment at your disposal.
2. GOT PERMITS?
Don’t worry, we did….
3. What’s that?! There are no good fishing holes in the project area?
With a few digs of this excavator arm, we created some 20 foot deep lunker holes for trout to hang out in and for kayakers to play in at high flows.
4. Trust is key
You should always trust your equipment operators (and wear a good hard hat) when doing river restoration work on this scale.
5. What does a bird see…
Above: Aerial view of project area where river cut through bank into pond.
Above: Aerial view of project area post restoration with river bank restored and stone cross vanes evident in middle of channel.
6. Getting it done!
Unloading plantings for transfer to their new homes.
AND…. be sure to check out the EPA success story for this great project:
