Infiltration Steps at Hothole Pond 2018
The project area before starting. Rain water ran through this old access area delivering runoff and sediment to the pond.
Infiltration steps are built from the bottom up. The first two cuts of 6" by 6" pressure treated timber are in place. The timbers should be flush to the sides and bottom to prevent water from going under or around them.
You can see that the fourth step up needed to be two timbers deep to fill the gap below riser. This prevents water from traveling under the timber.
It's important to use clean 3/4" stone for infiltration practices like this. The water moves into and through the pore spaces between to the stone then into the ground.
The timbers are held in place with rebar rods at each end and in the middle.
Some of the crew with Mark and Sherry Blanchard on the completed steps.
The steps a few weeks later looking great!
The Blanchard also backfilled an existing timber at the bottom of the driveway to send runoff from the driveway to the vegetated area rather than down the yard toward the lake.
Even more erosion was prevented by installing a water bar above the beach. Sherry reports a year later that it's working great!
